Travelling is the best thing I have ever done in my life. It literally has led me to many places physically and metaphorically. Most of the time you hear people remark how “everyone should travel” or “travelling changed my life”. I wholeheartedly agree. The experiences I have had and the memories I have created are priceless. If you know me personally, you know that travelling has been a major part of my life for over 10 years.
When I discovered Costa Rica, it changed the entire course of my life. Specifically, the south Caribbean, a small town named Puerto Viejo. Several years ago, I desperately wanted to take a solo trip touring somewhere in Central America. I chose Costa Rica but I also believe Costa Rica chose me. I travelled on a guided tour for a few weeks with other people from around the world. The first place we stopped was in Puerto Viejo. I can remember, just like yesterday, the feeling of exiting the bus and stepping into paradise. My view was a beach and the sparkling blue sea beyond. Clear with the sun shining hot in the sky and the mysterious green jungle behind me. I fell in love right then and there.
I met my best friend and the love of my life in Costa Rica after travelling back and forth for a few years. Cheito was born right in the Caribbean of Costa Rica. Since I had already fallen in love with Puerto Viejo, it was only a matter of time until someone from the area came along and swept me off my feet. A very charismatic man, whose gentle and joyful demeanour made me like him instantly. We formed a solid friendship through deep conversations and similar dreams. He brought me to see different perspectives, opening my eyes to many things. He is a loving soul, very kind and generous. I am lucky to be with him and so grateful that we got to cross paths.
I realized he was the one for me when he was the only one I wanted to spend my time with. I wanted to achieve things with him. I never wanted to be apart. Difficult things to deal with as I was only a tourist in his beautiful country. That is a whole other post, but we decided we wanted to be together anyways, against all odds.
After we decided we wanted to spend our time on this earth together, and having a baby together, he built us a rustic wooden house in the jungle. We live a little off the beaten track, in our homemade oasis. He has worked so hard to make this home a paradise of its own. Planted around the yard are banana, plantain, yucca, lime, orange, mango, mangosteen, papaya, etc., etc., etc. Also, countless plants and flowers to make the yard look so manicured and pretty. I’ve already eaten plantain from our yard and I can’t wait to enjoy and share the fruits that will come.
Soon, I will be a resident of Costa Rica and him and I can continue sharing our love for our young son, cooking and eating delicious food, good conversation and the peace that comes from following our dreams and our hearts.
What places have you travelled to that were life-changing?
